Description of Interests

The use patient-reported outcome instruments to assess phenotype, disease activity and treatment response as well as unbiased high-throughput approaches (genetic, genomic, proteomic) as systemic sclerosis (SSc) disease biomarkers are the research focus. Currently there are no methods that allow physicians caring for patients with SSc to accurately predict disease course or treatment response. Novel methods to inform medical decision-making for each patient drive the research program. Currently, Dr. Hinchcliff and colleagues are obtaining skin as well as esophageal biopsies from patients with SSc to determine how gene expression in these tissues can be used as SSc biomarkers. Novel and traditional patient-reported outcome instruments are administered to patients with SSc to assess SSc disease severity and treatment response. Together these diverse yet related approaches will enable the development of targeted treatment strategies based upon an understanding of underlying deregulated molecular pathways. Dr. Hinchcliff is the Director of Translational Research and the Associate Clinical Director for the Northwestern Scleroderma Program. Her clinical goals are to provide state-of-the-art clinical care to patients with the disease and conduct clinical trials to test the efficacy of new therapeutics. The clinical and research arms of the Program are closely integrated in order to provide expert clinical care while fostering the discovery of novel treatments, and one day, a cure.
