Chair's Message

Harnessing the creativity, engagement and leadership of our faculty and staff, the Department of Medicine develops advances that resonate across the nation, determine best practices, and are guided always by our core mission: Patients First.”

Susan E. Quaggin, MD, FRCP(C), FASN
Chair, Department of Medicine
Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine

I am privileged to have worked in one of the best and most extraordinary departments of medicine in the world for the last 10 and a half years and I am honored to now serve as Chair as this department continues to lead the country in creating positive change in healthcare.

The Department of Medicine is fueled by a breadth and depth of faculty, staff and trainee talent. Every day these professionals carry forward the commitment to advance equitable healthcare beyond the single patient through discovery science, clinical research, and implementation.

As a community of more than ~650 departmental staff members, ~900 full-/part-time regular and research faculty, and ~350 trainees (fellows, residents, post-doctoral fellows and graduate students), we are the largest department at Northwestern Medicine providing direct clinical care to communities across Chicagoland, performing cutting edge research and driving breakthroughs that transform lives and the education essential to arming future generations with the tools they need to provide the best possible care.

As we lead the country in creating positive changes in healthcare, we commit to delivering on the need to develop a healthcare system that will provide exceptional and equitable care to its communities, expand its global leadership in research, education and clinical innovation, and promote health justice in all we do.

To advance these goals requires commitment, dedication, and an inclusive environment, one that encourages innovation and creative solutions to complex problems and unexpected challenges. The creativity, engagement and leadership of our faculty and staff members across the department will continue to develop the kind of advances that resonate across the nation, determine best practices, and are guided always by our core mission: Patients First.
